Why Not to Install Window Film Yourself: Five Reasons

January 29, 2025 by Carol S Leave a Comment

Why wouldn’t you want to install your own window film? Let us count the ways!

What could possibly go wrong if you install your own window film?

You might have woken up with the idea of installing your own window film. Maybe the idea came to you in a dream and you thought How hard could it be? We’ve seen plenty of window film projects gone wrong, and are often called in to fix those do-it-yourself jobs. So before you do it yourself, here are some reasons you’d maybe want to call us instead!

Wrong measurements

You’ve all heard that old saying in construction Measure Twice, Cut Once, right? Well, lots of people tend to eyeball it with window film. Or even if they want to measure their windows, they’ve lost their measuring tape! If that sounds like you, maybe read Ten Ways to Get Organized Right Now. And get back to us later. Window film is not something where you want to guess about how big your window is. And with more complex installations, measuring is even more important!

Bubbling Film

You’ve seen those big air bubbles on car window film installations, haven’t you? You’re stuck in traffic, and you look over and–there it is–an assault on your eyes and brain! Don’t be tempted to yell out the window, “But WHYYYYY???” because you just don’t know who’s armed these days. And chances are, the driver already knows how horrible their windows look, without the reminder. Anyway, the point is don’t let bubbling film happen to you!

Wrinkles

We’re not talking about crow’s feet around your eyes. We’re talking about wrinkles in your window film! Ugh. Another reason not to take window film into your own hands. Once there are wrinkles, there is little you can do but start over. And let the cussing begin.

Warranty issues

Did you know that when you install your own window film you might not get the benefit of the warranty? Many major brands issue a warranty when a professional installs the window film. For example, 3M issues a warranty, but the film needs to be installed correctly.

Damage potential

Do you have a place to store that beautiful window film while you’re getting ready to install it? Have you trained your cats and your crazy border collie not to jump all over and scratch it? If the answer is no, then you might want a pro doing the install for you!

Falls and injuries

As the picture above illustrates, falling happens more often that you might realize. And you might not have everything you need–such as the correct ladder. (Yes, we know this is reason #6, but who’s counting?) And if you’re determined to do it yourself, the CDC has plenty of info about Ladder Safety. There’s even a Ladder Safety App (scroll down).

We make it easy!

You can fill out our Quick Residential Estimate form if you need to have window film installed by us. Give us a call and we can steer you into the right choice, and keep you safe from bubbles, wrinkles, and falls. We’d love to help you choose the best film. We work all over the greater San Francisco Bay Area, from San Jose to the East Bay to the San Mateo Peninsula and Marin–and have expanded into southern California, too! Give us a call at 415.623.8700.

Distraction Markers on Glass: Five Reasons to Use Them

October 29, 2024 by Carol S Leave a Comment

Distraction Marker One
Distraction markers can be beautiful

We all get distracted from time to time, especially while walking around with a cell phone in one hand and a donut in the other. Or maybe you get distracted by everything around you, just like — oh, look! a puppy! Wait, what was I saying? Anyway, if you get distracted, distraction markers on glass could help you, your friends, family, coworkers, and others avoid injuries. If you’re wondering what Distraction Markers are, this article is helpful: Utilizing Distraction Markers in Office Spaces. By the way, distraction markers are a big topic of conversation for facilities managers.

They can be beautiful and simple

As you can see from the image above, your distraction marker can add a design element to your glass. Although many distraction markers are stripes, yours can be different. Does your company work with trees? Are you a plumber? You can add a design that illustrates what you do. And not in a blatant, hit-your-customers-over-the-head way, either. Your design can be subtle and beautiful.

You can use your company logo

In the interests of privacy, we’re not showing you an image of a company logo, but keep in mind that we can use your logo on your glass. So your distraction marker can be both a safety feature as well as an advertisement. We think that’s pretty cool.

Distraction Markers for Privacy
Distraction Markers are for Privacy

Distraction markers keep you safe

People walk into glass doors more often than you might think. But do they talk about it? NO–they do not! And that’s one reason no one knows how many accidents there truly are. Because where’s the data? It’s a secret–that’s where! Anyway, no one in their right mind would walk into the glass above. Would they? If you ever see an entryway covered with plywood and duct tape, you can probably guess what happened. Not only is it inconvenient to get that fixed, it’s dangerous because…glass. And also, it’s a security risk while you wait to get the glass repaired and the security guy has to work extra hours to protect your space.

Distraction Markers Design Element
Distraction Markers as Design Element

They add privacy

In the example above, you can see how much privacy is added with the addition of a simple design. And you can choose how much of your glass you want to cover. By the way, we talk a lot about privacy. Here’s a post you might like: Is Window Film Good for Privacy?

They can be installed on any length of interior glass

Distraction markers are plotter cut from 3M Dusted Crystal or Frosted Crystal and can be installed on any length of interior glass. Sometimes a single horizontal stripe can be the best type of distraction marker. It depends on you and what look you’d like to have.

Does this topic make you distracted?

If choosing a style for your distraction marker is overwhelming, give us a call! We’d love to help you choose the best distraction marker for your building. We work all over the greater San Francisco Bay Area, from San Jose to the East Bay to the Peninsula and Marin–and are expanding into southern California, too! Give us a call at 415.623.8700.

Design Secrets with Decorative Window Film: You Need to Know These

August 14, 2024 by Carol S Leave a Comment

Did you know? Window film isn’t just something you slap on your car window. There are many ways you can use window film–from geometric patterns to custom graphics. If you were unaware of all the design possibilities, hang in there and we’ll show you a few examples of how you can use window film. By the way, we’ve talked about decorative window film before: How to Use Decorative Window Film. Window film has become much more subtle in recent times, so hang in there.

Window Film Creates a Barrier But Lets Light Through
Window Film Creates a Barrier But Lets Light Through

Outdoor privacy

With cities becoming more and more crowded, you can use window film so that your neighbors don’t always have to see what you’re doing. On the rooftop above, you can see how window film creates a barrier, yet still lets light through. If you like to use your rooftop for picnics or gardening (as many do in San Francisco), this is a good option.

Privacy indoors

It’s critical that you have privacy indoors as well as outdoors. Window film isn’t an all-or-nothing proposition. For instance, you can cover half a window with window film so either your neighbors or your kids–or your neighbors’ kids!–don’t see what you’re doing. This is a good option for people who live in popular resort towns, where tourists gawk at their patios or decks. We’ve also covered some surprising uses for window film.

Dichroic window film for the win!
Dichroic Window Film

Dichroic window film gives you color!

Here’s another example, above, of what you can do with window film. In this case, Dichroic window film for the win! Isn’t it fun? Kids of all ages love the Dichroic window film. But you don’t have to use this film for a classroom. It would be equally fun for a kids’ room or gameroom as well.

On another note, 3M has some beautiful architectural finishes that can be used on glass or other surfaces. We love the 3M Fasara glass finishes: A new series of the popular Japanese paper “washi” design is available. The Shigure surface has a special matte finish that expresses the delicate fibers of Japanese paper.

Extending privacy outdoors

You don’t want everyone to see what you’re barbequing all the time, do you? Neither do we! Above is a privacy screen we did for a customer in Marin county. Of course, you could also cover a glass wall or partition indoors, too. Some people like to hang glass partitions and cover the glass with window film for a semi-transparent wall. You can create a wall without building something that blocks light and air flow.

We’ll keep you informed

Have questions about how to use decorative window film? Give us a call and we’ll give you some ideas! We’d love to help you choose the best window film for your home or office. We work all over the greater San Francisco Bay Area, from San Jose to the East Bay to the Peninsula and Marin–and beyond! Give us a call at 415.623.8700.

Is Window Film Good for Privacy?

March 13, 2023 by Carol S Leave a Comment

Yes, window film can be used for privacy. It can be applied to glass surfaces to obscure the view into a space, while still allowing light to pass through. There are different types of privacy window film available, such as frosted or tinted film, and they can be used in both residential and commercial settings. Here are some things you might not have considered when considering window film for privacy.

Is Window Film Good for Privacy?

Window film doesn’t clutter up your space

If you’re living in a small space, or are thinking about window film for an awkward room, window film won’t add to your clutter. You could put curtains on your window, but curtains will collect dust and require more maintenance than window film. Plus, you can actually use window film as part of your decor, since films come in different colors and can add to the look of your space.

Window film has a clean look

If you’re a minimalist, or even if you’re not, window film doesn’t even show. In fact, the great thing about window film is you don’t usually know it’s there! Unless you do it yourself and/or there are lots of bubbles or peeling. In which case, maybe consider hiring a pro! We know someone great! lol

How about window film for a balcony?

Are you tired of people on the street staring into your balcony? Use window film to block or partially block the view into your place. We wrote about using window film for patios and balconies before. Take a look! After all, many homes in the San Francisco Bay Area, are short on space, so it’s important that you have privacy.

If you can see your neighbor, they can see you, too!

Add privacy window film for a dentist’s office

We just chose dentist’s office because our dentist uses window film for privacy. But there’s really no limit to the places where window film could add privacy. For instance, we’ve seen it used as airports where people are charging their devices. And the added benefit is that it doesn’t require much in terms of permits, drawings, etc. We can even help you choose the perfect window film for your space.

You can choose a light window film

You don’t need to have a dark window film to get privacy, which goes against what some people believe. We’re not saying you’re “some people,” but you never know.

What’s the best privacy film?

We’re very fond of 3M Fasara window film. And you can read more about 3M Fasara window film in a series we wrote in the not-too-distant past. Many types are decorative, so you can have your privacy and beauty as well. It’s like having your cake and eating it, too!

Got questions about privacy film?

We have answers! Give us a call and let us help you choose the best window film for your privacy needs for your home or business. We work all over the greater San Francisco Bay Area, from San Jose to the East Bay to the Peninsula and Marin. Give us a call at 415.623.8700.

Eight Reasons to Hire Us to Install Your Window Film

February 15, 2023 by Carol S Leave a Comment

Eight Reasons to Hire Us to Install Your Window Film

You’ve been looking around trying to figure out who in the world could install your window film. You’re in the San Francisco Bay Area, and your cousin says they can put in your window film. But have you seen what they did to their own car? C’mon now–you need a professional. Here are just a few of the reasons to hire us to install your window film. We also like this article: Why You Should Hire a Pro to Install Window Film.

Experience and Expertise

Professional window film installers have the experience and expertise to properly install the film, ensuring that it adheres correctly to the window and that there are no bubbles or wrinkles. We won’t leave the work site because cousin Vinnie stopped by with a few cold ones or get distracted by our cell phones.

Proper Tools and Equipment

Have you ever started a DIY project, gone out to get all the tools, then realized that you could’ve just hired someone to do the job for you? Not too mention there goes your weekend! Professional window film installers have the proper tools and equipment to install window film, including specialized knives, heat guns, and other tools that ensure a smooth, wrinkle-free installation.

Guaranteed Work

Professional window film installers will typically guarantee their work and will fix any issues that may arise after the installation. We want you to be happy.

Time-saving

Window Works USA can complete the installation quickly and efficiently, saving you time and allowing you to use your space as soon as possible. You can help us by preparing your space, moving things out of the way, etc. But other than that, we do the work.

Save on costs

Hiring professionals can save you money in the long run, as they can identify potential issues and areas where film is needed, and can apply the film correctly to ensure that it lasts as long as it should. We don’t do “just ok” work–we take the time and have the patience to do the job right.

Warranty

Professional window film installers (like us) will typically offer a warranty on work, providing peace of mind knowing that if anything goes wrong with the film, we will fix it for you. Window Works has a one year Commercial Construction Warranty, which is a Standard Materials/Labor Warranty that is only used for Commercial Construction jobs.  3M (we’re a 3M dealer) provides their own Window Film Warranty which varies depending on the type of film installed, and is up to seven years, depending the installation. Again, we want you to be happy.

Customization

Window Works offers a wide range of customization options, such as different colors, shades, and designs, that can be tailored to your specific needs and preferences. We’re more than happy to give you suggestions based on your tastes. We may think of something you hadn’t occurred to you! Did you read our previous article Ten Best Ways Uses of Window Film for Your Home?

Compliance with local codes and regulations

Did you know that you can actually install Security Film to bring buildings up to code?! And using 3M window films to bring buildings up code can be up to seven times less expensive than installing new windows!

Building code may specify that glass in certain hazardous locations, such as glazing near wet surfaces, doors, floors, ramps and stairs meet certain safety glazing requirements. 3M™ Safety
Windows Films & Attachment Systems can help you quickly and easily meet safety glazing impact requirements at a fraction of the cost of replacing windows. According to 16 CFR 1201 Safety Standard for Architectural Glazing Materials. Local building codes vary, consult a local code official for
requirements and approval criteria.

This is What Happens When You Attend the Santa Clara NorCal Facilities Expo

September 29, 2022 by Carol S Leave a Comment

The Window Works Booth (and that’s Atlas Copco right behind us!) at NCFE!

Recently, a few of the Window Works Crew attended the Northern California Facilities Expo in Santa Clara. This Expo was September 20 – 21, 2022. Now, in case you were wondering, it wasn’t our first time at the rodeo! We’ve been before, and we’ll be going again. In fact, we even wrote about our previous visits! You might be interested in a couple of our recent trips:

  • The Window Works Crew at the 2021 Facilities Expo
  • The Southern California Facilities Expo

We also attended in 2019 in real life, plus the virtual event in 2020, and you can read about it here: Visit the Virtual California Facilities Expo 2020 November 18-19. We started going around 2015–if you can remember that far back!

That’s Donna Dris up in friend Sunbelt Rental’s lift!

Friends near and far

By now, we’ve attended so many of these expo’s that we’ve made a lot of friends! So it’s great to see familiar faces when we go, along with new friends, too! Some of our friends include Sunbelt Rentals, who’ve had the booth across from us for years, David, below, who serves drinks, and of course our pals at Atlas Copco!

The ever-friendly David, serving beer (and more) at Happy Hour!

Happy Hour Hosting

As we’ve done in the past, we sponsored the beer and snacks right by our booth, along with our neighbors and best buddies from Atlas Copco. This year, we had a make-it-yourself nachos bar, with ground beef, cheese, different salsas, sour cream, chips, cookies, and bottled water (for our non-drinking buddies). We loved seeing all the smiling faces and meeting new friends as well as neighboring booth people.

The swag!

Look at that cute little red shot glass from R&S Doors Gates and Docks, above (it lights up, too)! Atlas Copco also did some top-notch branding with their giveaways–the tool card blueprint, webcam cover, and bottle opener were excellent! Pumpman Norcal had those huge markers that won’t get lost since 1. they’re huge, and 2. they’re fluorescent! And Restoration Management Company’s giveaway of wipes in a travel bag? We’re hooked! We love having all these reminders of our time at the Expo! They’ll have a special home in our office. And maybe even our travel bags.

Donna, Irene, and Asia at the booth

And another thing!

Yes, we even got to talk about window film during the show! Luckily, we’re all very familiar and comfortable talking about window film. Many people don’t know just how many things window film can do these days. We fielded lots of questions about applying window film for different situations, and of course, one of the newest applications will be the anti-bird strike window film. We’ll be writing about that very soon!

Next time come join us!

While we’re happy to attend the Facilities Expos, we’d be even more happy if you’d join us next time! So keep a watch on the Northern California Facilities Expo’s website for more info about 2023!

Dark and Moody Interior Glass: How to use it and why!

August 17, 2022 by Carol S Leave a Comment

Dark and Moody Interior Glass

Why would you want to use dark and moody interior glass? Not simply because it’s trendy, right? This trend began last year, when images showing dark interior glass starting bubbling up all over the internets. In our experience with local San Francisco Bay Area businesses, glass office fronts are all going tinted AND combining with dark patterns — so for the first time in years we are seeing dark interior window film. If you want to know why you might want to start using darker and moodier interior glass, stick around. We’ve got some ideas and examples for you!

Because it’s mysterious

We all need more mystery in our lives, don’t we? The moody and romantic sight of this dark glass will make you curious about the space. Who lives or works here? What do they do all day? Would you like to have a similar space? These are questions which may start swirling around in your mind when you see a space like this!

Magic and mystery appear side by side with this dark film against the marbled floor

The new dark Fasaras have a special magic

Last year, the new dark 3M Fasaras started to appear with the blue and gray cloud dual gradients. With this year’s patterned window films thrown in, we can see a different story line building. By the way, we’ve written about Fasara window film before. You might enjoy some of these:

  • 3M Fasara Dichroic Film
  • 3M Fasara Decorative Window Film: Patterns
  • Highlights from the New Fasara Patterns

As you might be able to see, we’re huge fans of 3M Fasara! And if you’re wondering what the heck Fasara is: “3M™ Fasara™ is a family of polyester, decorative films for glass surfaces that transform an interior’s ambiance with finishes that have depth, subtly, modernity, energy, precision and more. Created in collaboration with leading designers from across the globe, the new, trend-setting collection will give you even more ways to create stunning visual effects on interior glass surfaces, as well as add privacy and control light.” So there’s that.

Check out this dark and moody bachelor pad!

Dark and moody glass plays well with others

As you can see in the image above, the dark, moody glass gets along with others. Look at all the different textures, such as this mottled stone in the bathroom and kitchen. It combines well with wood, tile, and many other materials, too. Color might be a consideration, as you’d want your glass have similar tones, but not be too matchy-matchy.

Create a mysterious room within a room

A space for relaxation…and more

Maybe you need a special place to unwind at the end of the day with your music and big leather chair. Or maybe you could use this room-within-a-room concept, above, in your office. You could even have an office at home that’s completely enclosed from the rest of your home.

Give Us a Call!

Maybe you don’t know exactly what you want yet. We can guide you! If you want to chat about your dark-and-moody options, give us a call! Window Works customer care is at 415.650.5200. Pick up your phone and enter our number! We really are very friendly, and we’ll answer your questions.

We work all over the San Francisco Bay Area, and would love to talk to you!

3M and the Now of Design

June 13, 2022 by Carol S Leave a Comment

Empathy is important! We love karaoke and listening to each other’s songs!

Recently, some of us at WindowWorks attended the Now of Design, a webinar put on by 3M. 3M occasionally puts on these fabulous webinars about design and window film or other kinds of film. Check out the last blog post about a 3M webinar here: Highlights from new 3M Fasara Patterns. Here are some of the ideas from that webinar that might interest you.

Design and Empathy

As designers, we all need to be good listeners. Our clients need us to respond to them and assimilate what they say. And we’re designing for a global audience, as well as for a neurodiverse one, says Sandra Olave, Chair of Interior Design at College of Creative Studies. But we also need to listen to each other and those on our teams — one of the ways we do that at Window Works is through celebrations (and things like karaoke, too). We’d also like to point out the great job that Megan Kennedy did moderating the talk.

photorealistic renderings in spaces can create a more healing environment

Healing Environments

We have the ability to create photorealistic renderings in spaces. It’s a great time to be doing design. We can layer tools, study options… We’re creating environments that have the opportunity to have a huge impact, connect, and heal. Design is influenced by the times we’re living in. Colors are more muted when the economy is down. In prosperous times, colors become brighter. These were some of the ideas put forth by Rich Bonnin, Design Principal, HGA. And we agree that having either windows that open out onto nature or wallpaper with images of nature can help create a healing environment.

Creating a Welcoming Space

It’s critical to create a welcoming space, especially now when people are coming back to the workplace. Many people might not want to come back, so it’s part of our mission to make workplaces as welcoming as possible. We can of course elicit feelings from the spaces we create. Use the colors and shapes that represent the brand, explains Ryan Kovalak, Executive Director, Environments & Experience, Monigle. You may want a space that’s fun and energetic. Or you could want a calmer mood for some areas. Not everyone is an extrovert, and some may need quiet to do their work.

The Future of the Workplace

We need to repurpose the office. The model we had worked for a long time, but now things are different. Kovalak explains that the office used to be a way to bring people together, but the office needs a new purpose. The office can still be a hub. It represents a sense of community, collaboration, and a social function, rather than one of efficiency. Bonnin adds that the last two years have been interesting. Less than 20% had a work from home policy, and now nearly everyone does. We’ve proven that we can do our work anywhere and be as remote as we wish. The question is: What have people gotten used to at home where they’ve been able to move around from the kitchen to the office to the back patio? And how can those lessons be applied to the business environment? Collaboration is a work mode we need to understand and support. By the way, we loved having someone’s dog appear in the webinar, too. An illustration of what we might be missing if we move back into a corporate office. Do corporations need to allow pets to make offices more welcoming?

Inspiration and Design Paralysis

People are looking around to see what everyone else is doing. Many are putting off decisions on expensive projects, either due to expenses or paralysis. Everyone wants flexibility from their office space. But, as Bonnin explained, life goes on. Decisions need to be made. Surprisingly, younger people are worried about not seeing their boss, and being overlooked for opportunities, promotions, etc. Kovalak adds that it’s smart to pause a little bit. People are going back to the places that were familiar that now seem like the past. “Everything needs to be reimagined. Small things can have big impact. And big things can have small impact. Wellness is no longer a trend.”

Hybrid Environments

Not everyone wants to go back to work, but it’s largely dependent upon what people do for a living, not so much which generation they’re from, says Bonnin. If you’re working in a call center, you don’t necessarily want to drive 45 minutes each way (especially with the price of gas now) to sit in a cubicle.

Connection is Critical

As Olave says, she makes her students feel like they’re superheroes! Bonnin makes a very good point when he says that for people without that connection, it’s just as easy to go from one company doing zoom calls all day to another company doing zoom calls all day. It’s expensive to companies. What can we do to make people feel like a part of the organization? To answer that point, we at Window Works make it a point to celebrate our wins, our birthdays, and our local holidays–and that includes karaoke. We say that not to brag, but in the hopes that other companies can also have an inclusive environment and celebrate all the members of their teams. What does your company or team do to ensure everyone feels included?

Here is one highlight from the new 3M Fasara Patterns

By now you’ve probably realized that everyone at Window Works is a huge fan of 3M and Fasara window films. And if you haven’t realized that, then you’re in for a treat! Because we’re going to share some of the newest, funnest, most gorgeous window films and some of their uses. Prepare to be surprised!

Here are some of our favorite new Fasara patterns.

3M™ DI-NOC™ Architectural Finishes

What is 3M™ Fasara™?

Straight off their website: “3M™ Fasara™ is a family of polyester, decorative films for glass surfaces that transform an interior’s ambiance with finishes that have depth, subtly, modernity, energy, precision and more. Created in collaboration with leading designers from across the globe, the new, trend-setting collection will give you even more ways to create stunning visual effects on interior glass surfaces, as well as add privacy and control light.” By the way, we’ve written about 3M Fasara before. Matte Series offers fingerprint resistance, matte texture, and an outstanding tactile feature

The Matte Series offers realistic texture by converting incident light into diffuse reflection and suppressing specular reflection. Specular reflection is a type of surface reflectance often described as a mirror-like reflection of light from the surface. The matte finish offers a softer lighting, without blinding people coming into your space. This series also provides fingerprint resistance. Explore the new world of design possibilities with 3M Matte Series.

Abrasion Resistant Series

3M™ DI-NOC™ Architectural Finishes Abrasion Resistant AR Series are decorative surface finishes for interior applications in high-traffic areas. The abrasion resistant top layer reduces the visibility of scratches. So, if you have a surface that routinely gets scratched by people wanting to “leave their mark,” you can use the abrasion resistant series on those surfaces. Check out the table below for an example!

3M™ DI-NOC™ Architectural Glass Finishes

3M™ DI-NOC™ Glass Finishes can be used behind many glass surfaces and provide an opaque dimensional look when viewed from the front glass surface. The current Product line can be found in the 3M™ Glass Finishes Product Catalog. Ask us for more information.

Whiteboard glass finishes

Last, but not least is this new whiteboard glass finish. The 3M Whiteboard finish can be used to turn glass into a whiteboard, transforming a plain office wall into a learning opportunity! This architectural finish can convert interior surfaces into creative and collaborative environments. It’s compatible with most dry erase markers.

Check out 3M’s spec sheet for all the details.
