Why is Frosted Window Film so Great?

If you live in an urban environment, or if you have neighbors too close to you, you’re probably aware of how important your privacy is. There’s always one busybody in the neighborhood who has nothing better to do than peer into your windows. Am I right? But there’s a way to outsmart that busybody: with frosted window film!

Bathroom privacy

Sometimes the busybody isn’t someone in your neighborhood. Like the scary phone call that comes from inside the house, sometimes the busybody is inside the house too! Kids love to poke around and if you’re enjoy taking showers, you can have frosted window film installed so you’re covered up just in case the little ones wander in “by mistake.” You can also have that frosted film put up on windows where neighbors can peer in. How to Prepare for Extreme Weather: Six Ways

How would you prepare for extreme weather? Recently, we had a heat wave in the San Francisco Bay Area with temperatures in some areas nearing 100 degrees Fahrenheit. This was still technically in winter, so many of us were shocked that it could happen. Many lost power, and some wondered what else might be next. Want to know some ways to prepare? Then read on.

Consider additional insulation

Many older homes have inadequate insulation. Although this might not be something you could do yourself, it could be a good project that will not only pay dividends down the road, but make you more comfortable. Having an extreme weather event isn’t just an inconvenience; huge temperature variations can actually cause bodily harm. There are a few reasons to insulate your home better.
Here are a few:

Maintain comfort
Save on heating and cooling bills
Reduce condensation risk

Keep a Go Bag packed

After the fires in California and other parts of the western states, many of us keep a Go Bag (or emergency kit) handy and packed. A Go Bag should have at a minimum three days worth of supplies. Inspect your Go Bag occasionally and ensure everything is updated. If you have old snack bars, for instance, toss them and replenish your supplies. Make sure the batteries are fresh in the flashlight. Also (and this is from personal experience!) bring a deck of cards or a book, as boredom can be a problem when you’re evacuated. A couple of items no one ever mentions? How about slipping in some chocolate and wine? On a more serious note, The New York Times, in conjunction with WireCutter has a very thorough explanation of what should go in your Go Bag. But the following is a short list and good place to start.

Cash (ATMs may not work if power is out)

Choose your insurance wisely

Are you friends with your insurance agent? A quick call to them could give you some ideas about what to add or delete from your policy. Maybe you don’t have adequate insurance for extreme weather. Take an hour or two to ask some basic questions. By the way, you may be eligible for discounts if you take measures to protect your home or business against floods or fires. Questions to ask your insurance agent

Does my insurance cover floods? How about mudflows, landslides, or sinkholes?
What coverage can I expect in a fire?
Does my insurance cover a hotel if I’m evacuated?
Would I get a discount if I’m enrolled in a Firewise neighborhood?

Keep printed maps

Yes, printed maps seem like ancient history! But in an emergency, and if cell towers go down, it could help your peace of mind. We’re big on peace of mind around here! Remember Thomas Guide maps? You can still get a nice spiralbound edition for less than $100. If nothing else, it’s a good coffee table book, and you could play Thomas Map trivia–a game we just made up!

Know your neighbors

Keep a list of your neighbors, with addresses, names, and any other information about them. These days, hardly anyone seems to pay attention to their neighbors, but you could be different. Neighborhood block parties are fun and you wouldn’t even need a designated driver to get home. Of course, you don’t have to invite hundreds of people–you could just invite the neighbors who live the closest to you.

Add window film

Five Favorites for Your Best Spring Ever

We know it’s not actually spring because it’s still February as I write this. That is, it’s not calendar spring. But here in California and most of the west, spring arrives a little earlier than in other parts of the country. So here are some things–and yes, we include window film among our favorite things–that might help you enjoy springtime even more than you would already.

Favorite colors

Of course we’ve talked about Pantone and which colors we could choose if we were repainting or choosing colors for furniture or rugs. We’re all about colors. You might like our previous post 2026 Color of the Year.

Best flowers for spring

Most flowers are beautiful and inspiring, with only a few exceptions. But some might require you to grab your inhaler. Which are best loved outdoors and which bring on the sneezes? In early spring here we have daffodils and yellow acacia trees in bloom. Although the acacias are beautiful, many are allergic. Daffodils are a safer bet to bring inside your home. A window film you might enjoy

Furniture for a spring refresh

No, you don’t have to change out your furniture every season! That is, unless you’re an interior designer with access to a huge warehouse or place to store that furniture. Window Film: Ten Things We Love

We know, we know. We’re prejudiced because we actually love everything about window film. Well, almost everything. So it’s kinda difficult to pin us down to just ten things we love about it. There are so many things to love! And right now it’s Valentine’s Day, so we need to focus on what we love about it.

So much variety!

This could be one of our favorite things about window film. You can have decorative film, film that protects against breakage, or film that controls the temperature. Or a combination of all three. And those are just three of the options.

Create privacy

With so many people living so close to each other, many of our clients want to create privacy. People may be watching you while you cook dinner or lounge around in your pajamas. Do you want that? No! Of course not!

Add drama

No, not that kind of drama. The other, good kind of drama! The kind where visitors to your home or office say “How’d you do that?” Window film now comes in all sorts of patterns and colors, as well as the much-loved invisible or nearly invisible variety.

Block views

Maybe you have a sorta good view, but you’d like to block that dumpster next door. You can block part of a window with window film. We wrote about this in our last blog post: Surprising Uses for Window Film.

Insert color

Window film isn’t just clear or opaque.You can also choose colored window film. Yes, really. You can even do some form of color blocking with window film. The options are endless.

Stabilize temperature

This is one of our favorites. You can make your home feel cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. You can even start using that one corner of your home that gets really uncomfortable from either heat or cold. Protect furniture, flooring, and artwork

We all have that one friend with the big, beautiful windows, and the furniture that’s bleached from the sun. Don’t let that be you! You spent a lot of time and energy getting everything perfect in your home office, so take the next step and protect your furnishings against UV sun damage.

Save the birds

We wrote an entire blog post about this. There are many bird collisions, and too many birds die from these collisions. But you can protect the birds with window film. And there are more choices now than there used to be, too.

Hide the sippy cups

Do you suddenly have lots of drink containers, sippy cups, or mismatched kitchenware? You can hidr all that junk with window film on your kitchen cabinets. Or your bathroom or office cabinets, for that matter.

Surprising Uses for Window Film

Why not cover only part of your bathroom window with film?

You’ve all seen window film and the usual applications, but how about some surprising uses for window film? No doubt you can use window film on those big, leaky windows that either let in cold or heat when it’s unwanted. But what about some more creative uses for window film? What about those? We have loads of ideas about window film, and even though we might not be surprised, you could be!

Create privacy in a bathroom

Maybe you had kids and now your bathroom is being used by a whole different set of people (and little people, too!). In that case, you could use window film to block the lower half of your shower to make it more difficult for prying eyes to see in just in case they wander into the bathroom while you’re in there. This not only avoids embarrassment for you, but trauma for the kids! We’ve talked about privacy many times before, and here’s a post you might like: Is Window Film Good for Privacy?

Hide stuff in kitchen cabinets

Your kitchen cabinets might have become more cluttered or else they’re now filled with 10,000 sippy cups. And you don’t want your friends or your own family seeing how disorganized those shelves are. So cover those glass kitchen cabinet doors with window film. They’ll look pretty and you won’t have to replace all the cabinets! Here’s an article with some ideas about how to use window film around the house.

Use decorative film to mirror design elements

Did you know that you can mimic your wallpaper, curtains, or other design elements with window film? We particularly love the rice paper look to give you that Asiantique look in your interior decor. If you have gorgeous antique furniture, why not extend the look to your windows. It can be as subtle as you like with decorative film. 3M has some beautiful window films that can add interest to your windows.

Cover part of a window

You don’t have to cover 100% of a window! If you like the trees outside your window, but don’t want to see the cars on the street, why not cover the bottom half? That way, you’ll still get the benefit of seeing the trees. If you’re worried you might miss something happening outside the windows, you could always install a camera to see cars in your driveway or on your street.

Or, like one of our friends, covered their window with *shudder* glue because he was so frustrated? If you want more privacy, but still want your windows to look like an insane person doesn’t live in your house, read on.

It’s not your grandma’s window film anymore

Maybe you’re thinking of people who’ve installed their own automotive window film. It’s all purple and bubbly and…just awful. But window film has changed with the times! Yes, you can still mess it up by installing your own, but there are so many more choices available now. And you don’t have to do it yourself, either! We can come over and install it for you. Window film comes in all stripes and even polka dots now

Seriously, if you want your window film to have stripes, we’re here for you. It’s not even that unusual. Your window film can match your wallpaper or the interior theme. What’s the Best Winter Window Film?

Five Fantastic Reasons to Avoid Cheap Window Film

Maybe you’ve considered installing your own window film, and you found some on Facebook marketplace or eBay. That’s all well and good, but did you consider the down side to buying and then installing that cheap film yourself? There are a few reasons, but here are the top five. We’ve written about all the reasons window film is not a DIY project, but we thought this adjacent post was a good idea.

You’ll void the warranty (if there even is one!)

Many of the major window film manufacturers will provide a warranty, but the window film needs to be correctly installed. And by that, we don’t mean by your brother-in-law who has a few extra hours on the weekend! We are professionals here and have installed window film at many homes and businesses. The cheaper film probably doesn’t come with a warranty, so there’s that, too.

Install failure and inferior adhesives

Even with the best intentions, sometimes things happen. Ladders slip, people fall down, and window film can be destroyed. And occasionally, all three of those things can happen at the same time! Not to scare you, but it’s safer to let a pro handle your installation, especially on larger windows or in tricky situations. Cheaper window film often has inferior adhesives, so that makes installation even more difficult.

Bubbles and creases

Installing window film can be tricky. For instance, you can get bubbles and creases if you’re not careful. If you don’t know how to install film and remove the bubbles, your film could look really bad. And as we’ve said before, the best film installations are when you don’t even know it’s there. With cheap film, bubbles and creases are more likely.

Poor heat or UV protection

With high-quality window film, you’re protected against UV radiation (depending upon the film you choose). But if you choose cheap film, you never know what could happen! Maybe the film won’t protect you even if their marketing promises that it will. Not only that, but promises of heat protection probably won’t happen, either.

It’s ugly

Do you care about how your window film looks? If so, avoiding the cheap stuff is highly recommended. When your family and friends come for a visit, do you want them to make the face they make when they eat something they don’t like? NOOO! And that’s a pretty good reason to avoid the cheap stuff.

Window Film and You: Six Things You’re Dying to Know

We know you lie awake at night thinking about window film. Just like we do! Others have visions of sugar plum fairies. But you? You’re not like that! So in order to help you sleep at night, here we go with some frequently asked questions you’re dying to know about window film!

What types of window film are available?

There are so many types of window film that we couldn’t possibly list all of them here. But in the past few months, we’ve covered some of the most popular, such as Safety Film, Low-E film, and Smart Film. But there are so many more films than that! There’s decorative film, frosted film, privacy film, and so on.

How to choose the best window film?

Sometimes people call us because someone they know has window film and they like the way their office or home feels. That is, the temperature is more regulated, there’s less glare, or the film matches the decor. We have lots of ideas and can help you narrow down your choices.

Can I install window film myself? Why or why not?

Technically, you could install your own window film. However, our installers are professionals. That’s pretty much all they do (install window film). Well, they also love spicy food and pizza, but that’s another story! You could install your own but…do you really want to risk it? Your measurements need to be perfect, and you need all the equipment. It’s so much easier to have a professional install it. Also, if you install your window film yourself, you could end up voiding the warranty, as Bob Vila explains.

How long does window film last?

We can’t give you an exact time frame for how long your film will last. We do know that it has to do with the quality of the film. Low quality film will only last about five years. High quality film will last about ten to twenty years. And of course if you scratch or abuse the film, it won’t last as long (but you already knew that!).

What are the benefits of different tints?

Some window tints offer glare reduction, some reduce UV rays and block heat. Some help insulate your windows. And there’s also safety film. You might have a problem or two choosing. And that’s because all window films sound excellent! Who doesn’t want a safer building or less glare? Nobody, that’s who! Back in the day, we installed automotive window film. And now many cars come with window film already installed. So that tells you how popular it has become.

Are there any drawbacks to window film?

We think there are drawbacks to badly installed window film. If you’re driving around, you might see film that’s cracked, peeling, or turning purple on some car windows. It’s likely that people installed their own film in that case. There’s also the cost of installing film, which comes with any home or business improvement.
