Do You Need Smart Window Film?

August 27, 2025 by Carol S Leave a Comment

Business meeting inside glass-walled conference room.

First of all, what is smart window film? Is smart window film going to be smarter than you, and if so, do you need to dumb it down? Will it be talking to your smart appliances? If all the smart things are talking to each other, can you get into that conversation, too? Smart window film isn’t smart in the way that smart appliances are smart, although maybe in the future it will be.

Smart window film definition

Smart window film can switch between opaque and transparent so you can choose how it operates. Opaque (or transparent) window film can give you the privacy you want. Since you might not always want the opaque film, you can switch it on or off as needed. And it operates quickly, unlike bulky shades or window coverings.

Who uses smart window film?

Anyone who needs privacy can use smart window film. That includes homeowners, especially in places where there’s little privacy (think San Francisco or any big city), architects, building owners, etc. It can also give you security, since people can’t see in. It’s also used to control light in upscale luxury homes, retail outlets, and hotels. You might like this article: Create Privacy without Compromising Style.

Smart window film provides flexibility

Say you have a big office with conference rooms. But you don’t want to commit to any one kind of window film on your surface. Smart film lets you have the flexibility you need so you can have a transparent wall or switch to a more private setting as you need it. Also, smart window film makes you and your office look modern–because you are modern!

Public buildings need it

Airports, lobbies, and other high-traffic areas can switch from transparent to opaque in an instant. So your facilities manager is probably the person who would be likely to provide smart film to your building. By the way, if you’re a facility manager, you might like: Why Would a Facilities Manager Need Window Film? In addition to the convenience of smart film, all the benefits of regular window film apply.

Trains, Planes, and Automobiles

Although Trains, Planes, and Automobiles is a terrific movie from the 80s, all three modes of transportation can use smart film to reduce glare and create privacy. Ask the next shower curtain ring salesman (John Candy’s job in Trains, Planes, and Automobiles) you happen to see whether having smart film would be useful as they travel the country. And of course they’d say yes because nobody likes glare (and also, everyone wants more privacy).

Safety & Security Window Film: What’s up with that?

August 14, 2025 by Carol S Leave a Comment

Safety & Security Window Film: What's up with that?
Safety & Security Window Film: What’s up with that?

Did you know that you can reduce forced entry into your home, business, or school? Or that you might be able to protect yourself against storms and the glass shards that could result? Or that your glass could be held together in a frame to prevent shattering when it hits the ground? Safety and security window film is all that, and more. Read on to find out what else you can expect.

You might think there’s nothing you can do

If you feel hopeless sometimes with an increase in storms in your area, you can protect yourself. Really. Window film not only protects you and your skin from UV light, it can help protect you against storms. Storms can damage your home and business not only from rain, but also windstorm events and the debris that can pile up afterwards.

Feeling helpless is not an option

Doesn’t it feel better when you take action, rather than feeling victimized? We do! A little preparation now makes you feel more in control when things around you are changing quickly. The climate is changing, and everyone can do a little something to offset those changes. You might like our article about climate change: How does window film battle climate change?

Reduce spontaneous glass breakage

Have you ever seen glass break spontaneously? We’ve seen it, and it isn’t pretty. Often, entire city blocks have to be shut down to clean up the mess and ensure that no one is injured. Although glass is beautiful, when it breaks it can leave an awful mess. Here’s some more info, via Wiki, about spontaneous glass breakage. You can’t always see an imperfection in glass, and occasionally breakage occurs.

Delay intruders

Just a few seconds can thwart an intruder. While window film alone won’t stop an intruder, any delay can make an intruder move onto easier targets. Think about how quickly car thieves can break into a car. The same applies to windows at your home. If a burglar is nervous about someone seeing them enter a home, they’ll move on and try someplace else.

Have more peace of mind

Peace of mind is critical to better sleep, and feeling happier. Less worry about your safety and security helps you feel better in many ways. Why spend your time worrying when there’s something you can actually do to feel that peace of mind? Although we’re big proponents of yoga and meditation, we’re also big fans of window film–in case you hadn’t guessed!

Ready for some safety and security window film?

You can fill out our Quick Residential Estimate form if you need us to install some window film. Give us a call and we can help keep you and your home or business stay safer. Window Film Mistakes: Five We See Most Often!

July 30, 2025 by Carol S Leave a Comment

Did you know that when window film is doing its best work, it’s invisible? Yes, it’s true! If you can see window film, that means something is wrong. But when can you see window film? When there’s a mistake (or five). Here are a few that we see all the time. We didn’t start out trying to make this a funny blog post–it just seemed to happen! By the way, on the positive side, you might like Design Uses for Window Film.

Bubbling window film

Ok, did you install your own window film and forget to clean the window first? Did you think 15 minutes was enough to cover all your windows so you went ahead because you had a super fun event to go to and couldn’t be late? Those are just two of the reasons your film could be bubbling. That is, not cleaning the window, and hurrying. We see it all the time–and usually have to fix it while trying not to laugh, which is harder than you’d think.

Purple window film

While window film does eventually break down, if it turns purple the technical reason is because of how the dyes age. But also if you choose cheap window film, it can turn purple, so you probably shouldn’t buy that stuff you saw on Facebook marketplace because “it was a bargain.” That is, unless you truly want purple window film. Then it’s all good!

Peeling film

Window film can peel because of a few different reasons: the glue wasn’t strong enough, improper installation (see below), or because of using old film. If you had some old film sitting around in your garage for a decade or two, it’s probably a good idea to get some new film. Or if you didn’t completely saturate the film with enough liquid, that could also cause it to peel later. Also, if your film is exposed to harsh UV light for long enough, that can also cause peeling.

Sloppy cut film

Have you ever heard of the old saying measure twice, cut once? With window film, you could even extend it to saying measure three times, cut once. Cuts have to be exact. There’s no “oh, that looks good enough” with window film. You’ll need exact measurements. If your window film is cut to the wrong size, your install will look bad.

Improper installation

When window film is properly installed it’s invisible! You notice window film by how you, your home, and your business feel cooler. Of course, improper installation could encompass all of the reasons above. If you have edge gaps in your window film so it’s visible, that’s also a bad thing. So that’s a bonus and reason #6. You might like this article about an invisible enemy that’s stealing your greatest asset!

Ready for a mistake-free window film installation?

You can fill out our Quick Residential Estimate form if you need us to install some window film. Give us a call and we can help keep you from embarrassing mistakes. How to Make Sure Your Home Stays Cooler

July 15, 2025 by Carol S Leave a Comment

How to Make Sure Your Home Stays Cooler
How to Make Sure Your Home Stays Cooler

Planet Earth keeps on heating up. Every year gets hotter, or at least since scientists started recording temperatures. People have been hurt from climate-related causes, so it’s more important than ever to stay cool when the weather heats up. If you want your home to stay cooler, read about these ideas. Maybe one of them will spark your interest.

Run fans instead of AC

If you can add an extra fan or two and keep the AC off (if you don’t need it), you can get some cross-ventilation going. Think of the air bouncing around like the pool ball in a game of pool. Create a path for the air to flow through your home. Push the hot air out if possible, by lining up the fans, letting the hot air bounce out the window or door.

Use dehumidifiers if your air is moist

If you’ve ever lived in a humid climate, you know that moist air feels hotter. You can tell how humid your home is if the word moist makes you feel a little icky. 80 degrees can feel like 100 degrees if there’s humidity! While we all love our houseplants, they can make the air a little too humid. Pull out some of that humidity with a dehumidifier. Here’s some more info about dehumidifiers from Consumer Reports.

Unplug unused electronics

Do you even use that printer any more? Why not unplug it? How about all those weird appliances you bought during the last online sale? Unplug that electric mustache curler, the voice-activated espresso machine, and electric egg cookers. Your power bill will thank you, and your home will stay just a little cooler. And consider decluttering and getting rid of some of those appliances if you don’t use them!

On a similar note, spring is over, but you still might like our article about spring cleaning.

Swap out your light bulbs

Trade your old incandescents for some newer LED bulbs. LED bulbs generate less heat. Did you know that one incandescent light bulb can give out more heat than light? And that the incandescent bulbs are only 2.1% efficient according to this article from North American Power? That means that “for every 100 watt light bulb, only two of those watts is actually being turned into light. The rest is being turned into heat.”

Check your ceiling fan

Is your fan running in the right direction? If not, the hot air might be getting pushed down, causing everything to stay warmer. In the summer, change your ceiling fan so that the blades turn counterclockwise. This article from Home Depot tells you how. Then once the temperature is cooler, change the direction of the ceiling fan blades once again.

Invest in window film

Window film can definitely help, especially on those windows that get the most sun! We’ve written a lot about window film and its ability to keep your home, office, or school cooler. Why not try it? Here’s one of our most recent articles Will New Window Film Improve Your Summer Plans?

Will New Window Film Improve Your Summer Plans?

June 17, 2025 by Carol S Leave a Comment

With all the vacation plans spinning in your heads right now, maybe window film is the last thing on your mind this summer. But seriously, did you know that your summer could be even better? Summer is already a wonderful time to enjoy the beach, swimming, and family picnics. If you’re the kind of person who likes to improve things, listen up! Your life and your summer are about to get better. And some new window film for your home or office can help!

Summer heat can ruin your day

It’s easy to be overheated or even to get sunstroke on those hot summer days. Mayo Clinic has some ideas on how to prevent heatstroke. A few of those ideas include:

  • Wearing loose, light clothing,
  • Never leaving anyone (especially pets and kids) in a parked car,
  • Using sunscreen, and
  • Taking it easy during the hottest part of the day.

What the Mayo Clinic doesn’t mention is that window film can help keep your house cool. Not only that, but if you’ve given up using parts of your home because of heat or glare, you can take back your own home. If you or your kids are outside in the sun, you might want to zip inside the house to cool off. Window film helps you do that.

Your house needs sunglasses just like you do

We’ve mentioned the idea of sunglasses for your house before. When you go to the beach, you never forget to bring along sunglasses for yourself and your family, do you? They go right into the bag along with towels and sunscreen. So why would you not also protect your precious belongings, such as your furniture, rugs, and–most importantly–your family’s skin and eyes. UVA rays can come right through windows, and even be stronger in some cases. Check out what the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends to protect your skin (hint: it’s window film!). And yes, it’s the same window film that goes on your car.

Don’t forget household maintenance in the summer

You keep up with all the maintenance chores for your home. For example, when your roof leaks, you get it repaired. If your floor suddenly develops a hole, you get that fixed. And that old knob-and-tube wiring from 1932? You get it replaced with copper. But what about your windows? Don’t they deserve good treatment, too? Window film lets you see outside on those perfect summer days. You still get a great view without bulky curtains or shades.

Ready to improve your summer?

You can fill out our Quick Residential Estimate form if you need us to install some window film. Give us a call and we can steer you into the right choice, and keep you and your family cool during the summer. We’d love to help you choose the best film. We work all over the greater San Francisco Bay Area, from San Jose to the East Bay to the San Mateo Peninsula and Marin–and have expanded into southern California, too! Give us a call at 415.623.8700.

Say Goodbye to Scratches and Tags with Powerful Anti-Graffiti Films

May 28, 2025 by Carol S Leave a Comment

If you’ve been in the lobby or restroom of any big downtown building, you’ve probably noticed some scratches, etching, or graffiti, but with anti-graffiti films those can be eliminated. With our templates, you don’t have to completely replace your expensive mirrors or metal surfaces. We can customize something for you so that you can peel off that etched surface and have a clean surface underneath. We’ve written about anti-graffiti film before (that’s how popular it’s become). You might like Why You Need Mirror and Stainless Steel Anti-Graffiti Film.

Vandalism is everywhere

We don’t want to be alarmists, but you’d be surprised at how widespread vandalism is. For instance, just last week in Los Angeles, vandals wreaked havoc on police cars, storefront windows, and a metro train. The windows of a clinic were covered with red and black spray paint, according to the Los Angeles Times. Other acts of vandalism can destroy windows, doors, and public monuments. Many people will avoid an area if there is visible vandalism, hurting businesses. Also, it’s ugly to see.

Who needs anti-graffiti films?

Anyone from facilities managers, to building owners to small business managers can use anti-graffiti films. Even some homeowners could be hit by vandals. And, according to the L.A. Times article above, maybe police stations need it, too! Also theater owners, restaurants, and firehouses. On another note, did you know that anti-graffiti film can also block up to 99% of the sun’s UV rays? So that film you’re getting could do double duty.

What can you do?

Do you put up a sign that says Please don’t spray paint our doors!? Buy a pressure washer and spend hours trying to clean off the graffiti? Make friends with the taggers so they don’t vandalize your business? Pay off the Marking Mobster (a term we just made up!)? Put up cameras to record those destroying your property? Thoughts and prayers? None of these options has been great so far. Maybe you have another creative answer that we haven’t thought of! Here are some ways to prevent graffiti, which include things like visibility and lighting.

Anti-graffiti films help you stay ahead of tagging and etching

We do have a solution to the tagging dilemma: anti-graffiti films! We can create customized anti-graffiti films that can be peeled off to reveal pristine surfaces underneath. They’re sort of like a sacrificial film, giving their lives so that your building maintains its beauty. They can be applied to either the interior or the exterior of your windows. Plan ahead now to protect your investment and outsmart those taggers, especially if you already know that you’re going to be vandalized!

Need ideas about which anti-graffiti film to get?

If choosing which anti-graffiti film to get is overwhelming, call us! We’d love to help you choose the best film for your building. We work all over the greater San Francisco Bay Area, from San Jose to the East Bay to the Peninsula and Marin–and have expanded into southern California, too! Give us a call at 415.623.8700.

Make the Most of Your Views

April 29, 2025 by Carol S Leave a Comment

Make the Most of Your Views

You just bought or rented the most beautiful space, with 360-degree views, but how do you make the most of those views? We’ll give you three guesses (but we’re going to tell you anyway, so don’t worry)! Here’s a clue, though: if you cover your beautiful new windows with thick curtains, why even live in a place with windows?

See what others have done

Before you commit to anything, why not take a look at some of the most beautiful views you’ve ever seen? The inspiration may prompt you to change your window design. Elle Decoration UK has 10 homes with beautiful views you might like: 10 homes around the world that make the most of a view. Scroll down to the one designed by John Lautner, a pupil of Frank Lloyd Wright, to see a favorite.

Weigh the options

Of course you could do curtains, but what other options do you have? Drapes get dusty and need cleaning. Shades also can collect dust. Blinds can be a natural part of your decor, if you choose the right textures and colors. If you do have shades or drapes, make them simple so they don’t obstruct the view too much. Also, you might want to place your furniture so you can look out your windows. Sounds obvious, but a lot of people don’t do this. You might like this article from Better Homes & Gardens about how to hang curtains correctly the first time.

Add more windows

If your home or office is old-fashioned with only a few windows, you might consider adding more windows. That way you could really take advantage of your views. Consider when during the day you would be looking out your windows. Here’s a good article from Martha Stewart about Maximizing your natural light. Also, make sure you spend time in the parts of the house with the best natural light.

Design your layout to maximize the views

Have you ever been to someone’s house who would have beautiful views, but they’ve stuck a big bookshelf right in front of the window? Don’t do that! When you move in, think about where you place your furniture (or bathtub!) so that you can see out each window. You might take your own views for granted, but your guests will definitely love to see your views.

Use window film

Of course you knew we’d say this, right? Window film doesn’t block your view, and also keeps your space uncluttered. In fact, we’ve written about how to tackle clutter with window film. Check it out: How Window Film Keeps You Clutter-Free: Five Ways.

Ready to make the most of your views?

Give us a call and we can help you make the right choice. We’d love to help you choose the best film. We work all over the greater San Francisco Bay Area, from San Jose to the East Bay to the San Mateo Peninsula and Marin–and have expanded into southern California, too! Give us a call at 415.623.8700.

Why Use Window Film for Security?

April 16, 2025 by Carol S Leave a Comment

Why Use Window Film for Security?

Are you feeling a little more jumpy these days and are you considering window film for security purposes? A lot of people are feeling a bit more on edge, so using window film for security is a good idea. Window film can protect your home, your business, and your employees, too. Here are some examples of how you can use window film for security.

Shatter resistance

You can apply window film to make your windows more shatter resistant. You might be in a slightly dangerous area, whether from cars careening into nearby buildings from a busy intersection or break-ins happening in the neighborhood. Sometimes your building could be in the path of a bird migration, and there are films to protect your glass (and the birds!) from that, too. You might like our article Can Technology Save Billions of Birds with Window Film? Earth Day is right around the corner, and of course we always want to protect birds.

Blast mitigation

If you’re in a high-risk area (think government buildings, embassies, and other critical infrastructure), you definitely want to consider the risk of bomb blasts. Window film can hold shattered glass in place and reduce flying shards. This can also be useful for restaurants and shops. If your neighborhood is prone to earthquakes or high winds, window film can also protect you from glass shards shattering and hurting people. With climate change, there have been more high wind events, with some high rises experiences windows breaking.

Forced entry protection

Window film can be applied to make it more difficult for intruders to break through glass, providing an additional layer of security. Intruders and burglars often try to find the easiest point of entry, so why not make it a little more difficult to enter your building? Besides, window film is more cost-effective than other security measures, and it’s invisible, so it doesn’t hurt your aesthetic.

Protection against graffiti

Window film can be applied to protect glass surfaces from graffiti, which can be a costly and time-consuming problem to address. You can also use window film on metal surfaces, such as elevator panels or bathroom mirrors. It’s easier to replace a film than to replace an entire panel of glass or metal.

Privacy

You can obscure views of sensitive areas, such as security control rooms or data centers, or to provide privacy in areas such as locker rooms or restrooms. And in your home, you can use window film to keep your nosy neighbors from peering in. Here’s an article we wrote that includes some privacy tips: How to Make the Most of Your Windows.

UV protection

Window film can be applied to protect people and equipment from harmful UV rays, especially in areas where large amounts of glass are used, like government buildings, courthouses, and so on. We have written about how window film provides UV protection, and can even protect you against skin cancer! The Skin Cancer Foundation says it best: UV Window Film & Tint.

In summary

Overall, window film can be an effective and cost-efficient solution for addressing a wide range of security needs. It can provide an added layer of protection for buildings and people, and helps to deter intruders and other potential threats.

Have questions?

Spring Cleaning Tips You’ll Really Love

March 28, 2025 by Carol S Leave a Comment

When you think of spring cleaning tips, do you typically think of bleach and ammonia? Please don’t mix them together, though, as that is a recipe for disaster! You probably already knew that, though. However, stick around for some ideas that you’ll not just love, but actually use. Really.

Vinegar has many uses

Why is vinegar so good for so many things? And we’re not just talking about salad dressing, either! Here are a couple:

  • One tip we use all the time is to mix equal parts vinegar and water in a plastic bag and then rubber band that mixture around your shower head. Leave it for a few hours and you’ll have a sparkling clean shower head.
  • Another idea is to mix 1/2 cup vinegar with four cups warm water for an all-around cleaning solution.

The three-minute rule

Could you spare three minutes to get your house cleaner? Of course you could! Set the timer on your phone to three minutes and get cracking! Of course you could do five, ten, or fifteen minutes as well. Just do as much as you can in those few minutes. And then give yourself permission to stop.

If you’re more the three-hour or all-day cleaning type, you might like Martha Stewart’s How to Deep Clean Your Home in One Day.

Don’t buy organizers before cleaning

While this is a what not to do tip, it still applies. Most of us love to buy pretty organizers and then force our stuff into those organizers, which is backwards of course. Clean everything, purge what you must, and then get the organizers when you know where everything goes and everything is sparkling clean. You might like our recent post Ten Ways to Get Organized Right Now.

Dust from top to bottom

Once you’ve heard this idea, you can’t unhear it! Dust falls from the top of your rooms to the bottom because gravity. So get your stepladder out and start up high. Work your way down with that dust rag. And mop the floors after dusting.

Clean windows

If your windows have film installed, avoid harsh chemicals such as ammonia and don’t use paper towels as they can scratch the film. Use a mild soapy solution and a soft, lint-free cloth is best.

Advanced cleaning

If you’re adventurous, you could try to clean the oven! There are loads of commercially available oven cleaners on the market. You could also read this recent article: Things People Forget to Clean the Most. (We almost forgot the range hood filters.)

After spring cleaning

What do you do after your place is sparkling clean? Install window film, of course! You can fill out our Quick Residential Estimate form if you need us to install some window film. Give us a call and we can help you choose, and keep you and your friends cooler in the spring and into the summer. We work all over the greater San Francisco Bay Area, from San Jose to the East Bay to the San Mateo Peninsula and Marin–and have expanded into southern California, too! Give us a call at 415.623.8700.

Surprising Window Feature Reduces Your Power Bill by Hundreds

March 15, 2025 by Carol S Leave a Comment

Surprising Window Feature Reduces Your Power Bill by Hundreds
Surprising Window Feature Reduces Your Power Bill by Hundreds

Maybe you’ve been reading and rereading our blog posts whenever you get the chance. Or maybe not. In any case, if you’d like to reduce your power bill, you know what to do! Keep reading, that is. We’ve written about reducing your energy bill before. You might like: How Window Film Helps Save Energy Five Ways.

Get an energy audit

Want to know where your energy is going? Maybe your power company offers a free audit! Our local power company, PG&E, offers a free home energy checkup that you can do yourself. And it only takes five minutes! There may be some easy changes you can make to reduce your energy bill. You could also get an energy assessment from the Department of Energy.

Check your windows and seal the cracks

If you live in an older home, there are likely to be drafts coming from around the windows. Even newer homes can suffer from cracks and drafts. Inspect your windows (or hire someone to do it for you), and seal those cracks. There are probably hundreds of YouTube videos showing you how to do this, and it doesn’t have to cost a fortune. It’s an inexpensive way to save on your energy bill.

Be the first

Do you value being a leader? Energy costs are going up and up, while many people’s incomes are spiraling downwards. We don’t mean you! But you still want to be a leader and save costs on your power bills, right? So why not be the first on your block or in your neighborhood to have window film installed. (You knew window film would eventually come up, didn’t you?)

Double the efficiency

When you install window film on your single-pane glass, that pane becomes like a double-pane window. And if you install it on your double-pane window, guess what? It becomes like a triple-pane window, thus insulating you from the cold and the heat and also helping to lower your energy bills. You also might have to change the clothes you wear since window film makes the temperatures inside your home or office more even.

Immediate savings

You could get solar panels to help lower your energy costs (and we encourage going solar), however with window film you’ll get immediate savings! No sense waiting for years or decades to break even on your solar installation. Come to think of it, you could do both!

Ready to reduce your power bill?

You can fill out our Quick Residential Estimate form if you need us to install some window film. Give us a call and we can steer you into the right choice, and keep you and your friends cooler in the summer. We’d love to help you choose the best film. We work all over the greater San Francisco Bay Area, from San Jose to the East Bay to the San Mateo Peninsula and Marin–and have expanded into southern California, too! Give us a call at 415.623.8700.
